Goolge adsense is a mystery to me. Am I the only one?

So first of all I am just a shade into my hubpages journey and I have decided to write about what I enjoy, which is sports. I signed up for google adsense to see if I could make a few dollars while I write. So far it has not given me enough to buy a BIg Mac.
I am always searching other blogs and looking for information on how people make the supposed hundreds of dollars a month, and it all seems so difficult. I am not sure that setting up this and that and this again is worth the time, and I am not sure it will provide any results.
I am sure I am not alone out there. I figure there are more of me out there than there are of the hubpagers who are making bank.
What is the whole ebay affiliate thing and is it even still something we can do? How does Amazon work? Do I really have to talk about mesothelioma and Florida law attorneys to make a little money? That just seems dry and unexciting.
Another thing I was wondering was how you get traffic to your site. I utilize friends and facebook mostly, and have gotten over 2000 hits in four weeks, which isn't bad, but is there something I can do to get more people to my site?
As a new hubber I just feel a little frustrated right now. I am not looking to make hundreds of dollars, but a few wouldn't hurt. I would also love to get people to read my articles. Granted, they are mostly football previews and topics, but I do enjoy having people read them and leave me their feedback.
I know I am not alone out there. Who out there is willing to point me, and a lot of other people out there in the right place?

I am in the same boat. I tried getting traffic outside hubpages and haven't been too successful. My search engine traffic has surpassed my hubpage traffic though.
I have made chump change since joining hubpages. But for a hobby, making just a little bit of money isn't bad. I haven't made a hub in a few months, but I am still raking in some pennies from some hubs. If you just put a lot of effort into one hub, you can run with it for a long time. I originally thought that making a bunch of hubs would be best. But you can honestly make more by having one stellar hub than having 10 mediocre ones. As for traffic, I have been using Google Search Submit, and that has helped my search engine traffic quite a bit. The link is http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl

In addition, you could always ask for help, especially on the fourums so long as you don't post a link to any of your hubs (spamming).
